Our Legacy
Speed skating is Canada’s most decorated sport. Manitoba has contributed greatly to that.
Speed Skating Manitoba is proud of our skating accomplishments. Manitoba has a heritage of excellence in speed skating including Olympians; Sylvia Burka, Susan Auch, Mike Ireland, Kyle Parrot, Brittany Schussler, Shannon Rempel and many more. Canada’s two most decorated Olympians of all time are Manitoba speed skaters Cindy Klassen and Clara Hughes, both of whom have six Olympic medals to their names.
More recently, Heather McLean represented Team Canada at the 2018 Olympic Games in PyeongChang. Tyson Langelaar won four medals at the 2017 World Junior Championships in Helsinki, Finland and finished second overall at the 2018 World Junior Championships in Salt Lake City, USA. At the 2019 Canadian Junior National Long Track Championships Alexa Scott swept the competition and one all five distances. She finished fifth overall at the World Junior Championships. Immediately following the World Junior Championships Alexa arrived in Red Deer for the Canada Winter Games where she won three gold medals.
Tyson Langelaar brought home four gold medals and one silver medal from the 2019 Canada Winter Games and was awarded the Roland Michener Award by the Canada Winter games council, awarded to an athlete who exemplifies leadership, cooperation and excellence during the games. In 2019 Manitoba athletes brought home 11 medals from the Canadian Long Track Age Class Championships and 18 medals at the Can West Short Track Championships, being named most improved province at both events.
SUPPORT US
Speed Skating Manitoba has partnered with the National Sport Trust Fund to support the Susan Auch Oval, the only official speed skating Oval in Manitoba!
The proceeds will be used to support the development of the Susan Auch Oval in the following ways:
Host community public skating nights to increase awareness of the Oval, and to provide development and outreach opportunities for the sport
Hold free public skating daily to allow equal opportunities for all Winnipeg and Manitoba citizens
Hold competitions to select provincial and national events
Purchase equipment and technology to allow for continual improvements for the facility.
The National Sport Trust Fund (NSTF) is a philanthropic gift-giving program established through the Canadian Council of Provincial and Territorial Sport Federations (CCPTSF) for the development of amateur sport on a national level. The CCPTSF is a Registered Canadian Amateur Athletic Association (RCAAA) with the Canada Revenue Agency. As a RCAAA, they are able to issue an official tax receipt for all qualifying donations of $20 or greater. Sport Manitoba is the Fund Manager in Manitoba.
