Get ready for the School Races!

Speed Skating Manitoba is partnering with Winnipeg Central Speed Skating Club (WCSSC) to host a 5-week School Races Preparation Program!

February 5, 12, 19, 26 & March 4th at 5:30 pm – 999 Sargent Avenue (Cindy Klassen Centre)

Only $35.50 per skater for the 5-week program

This program is great for kids participating in the School Races in March at the Susan Auch Oval.

Coach Garrett from the WCSSC will teach skaters how to start, long strides, crossovers, and more!

Skaters will need to dress for the weather (outdoors), and bring a helmet (hockey or ski helmet), gloves, neck guard, and skates (any type).

1. Create an account
2. Scroll down to 3rd last program called ‘School Races Preparation Sessions’
3. Complete the waivers (Speed Skating Canada|Speed Skating Manitoba|WCSSC – phew!)
4. Fee $35.50 + tax (SSC $10|SSM $10|WCSSC $15)
5. Enter payment and you are done!
6. You will receive a confirmation email
7. Come to 999 Sargent Park and be ready to go on the ice at 5:30 pm.

I Can Skate Fast School Program

Speed Skating Manitoba is proud to offer this program that introduces school-aged participants to the sport of speed skating. Students will learn about short track speed skating through the book Lucy Tries Short Track by Lisa Bowes. This program is available to schools at no cost.

Interactive lessons have the following key learning objectives:

Lesson One: Let's Learn About Speed Skating (20 minutes)

Recognize the sport of speed skating as being one of the top winter sports in Canada

  • Understand the race format of a short track speed skating race

  • Reflect on what it means to be a good sportsperson

Lesson Two: Let's Try A Speed Skating Race! (30 minutes)

Apply their existing fundamental movement skills (running, acceleration, agility, and balance) in a mock-race environment held off-ice

  • Apply the rules of a short track speed skating race in an off-ice environment

take a field trip to the oval!

Speed Skating Manitoba operates the Susan Auch Oval, the only official speed skating oval in Manitoba, located at the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex.
