Volunteer roles
RUNNER VOLUNTEER
After each race or series of races, a Runner is responsible for taking the complete race forms from the Chief Timer and Chief Finish Line Judge and delivering them as quickly as possible back to the recording office. The Runners may also perform a variety of other tasks during the competition, i.e. taking messages to the Announcer, changes to the Clerks, Judges and Timers.
MEET COORDINATOR ASSISTANT
Meet Coordinator Assistant will support the Meet Coordinator prior to and during meet with receiving and verifying entries, setting the program of events, and ensuring that all paperwork before and during the meet.
REFEREE APPRENTICE
A Referee Apprentice has some experience as another official or has been a former skater and has a fair idea of the rules and will assist Chief Referee in watching and calling any rule infractions during races. Required to be on skates with helmet during meet.
STARTER ASSISTANT
Assists the starter with setup, take down and may take on some of the starts during the meet.
MANUAL TIMER ASSISTANT
The role of the Manual Timer is to record the time(s) of assigned skater(s) for each race with a hand stop watch (provided). Manual Timers provide secondary times as a backup for E-Timing.
E-TIMING APPRENTICE
E-timing Apprentice assists with setup of camera, computer and FinishLynx system. It is critical to continually train new e-timers as it is ideal to have a few available for each meet to work as a team.
PLACE JUDGE ASSISTANT
The role of the Place Judges Assistants is to determine the order of finish of the skaters in the race.
CLERK OF COURSE/MARSHALL ASSISTANT
Assist Clerk of the Course with distribution and collection of helmet covers, lining skaters in correct order prior to race and notifying skaters in change rooms of upcoming race times.
TRACK STEWARDS ASSISTANT
Track Stewards are responsible for maintaining and repairing the ice between races as well as replacing missing blocks on the corners during the races. Other on-ice duties may be assigned as directed by the
Chief Track Steward and/or Referee. They must be on skates, preferably speed skates, and be competent skaters and are required to wear a helmet.
RECORDER/COMP STEWARD APPRENTICE
Works with Comp Recorder/Steward in setup of meet paperwork, shadows recorder at event and assists with correlating results.
LAP COUNTER ASSISTANTS
Assist Chief Lap Counter; the duty of the Chief Lap Recorder is to inform the skaters (and officials) of the number of laps left to be skated in a race. The Lap Recorder Volunteer provides a check for the Chief Lap Recorder and looks after the lapped skater(s) if required.
MEDICAL VOLUNTEER
Medical coverage must include at least one (1) individual meeting the definition of one or more of the following: Physician, Advanced Care Paramedic, Advanced Medical Responder, Primary Care Paramedic, Sports Therapy Professional. The medical coverage team should include at least two members, at least 1 of which needs to have one of the above-listed designations. These requirements are mandatory to run an event. These individuals should have the training and experience in applying immobilization devices. The medical personnel must be provided with a communication system between the medical team and the event coordinator. The Medical personnel should have the necessary medical equipment and fully stocked first aid kits.
At least one member of the medical team must be rinkside at all times while skaters are on the ice, including warm-ups and practice sessions.
WATER CREW VOLUNTEERS
Water Crew provides and refills water pails for Track Stewards throughout the meet as required.
CHECK-IN DESK & VOLUNTEER HOST
Host check-in desk at start of meet to ensure skaters find assigned change room and guide parents to seating area or volunteer roles.
Host makes sure all of the volunteers and officials have a place to gather during breaks as well as replenish themselves with food and beverages.
