Speed Skating Manitoba is looking to hire a new Head Coach and Provincial Program Administrator for May 2023. This is an exciting position with an Olympic legacy!

Position: Speed Skating Manitoba Provincial Coach and Provincial Program Administrator 

Location: Winnipeg, MB 

Start Date: May 2023

Salary/Compensation: $50,000-$58,000 (dependent on coaching certifications and experience) per annum, paid semi-monthly, 4 weeks vacation, pension plan, and benefits available. 

Background Experience and Credentials

The successful candidate will have:

  • A minimum of 3 years of recent coaching experience within the sport of Speed Skating, and/or 5 years of competitive speed skating as an athlete. 

  • Speed Skating experience at a competitive level is an asset. 

  • NCCP Comp. Dev. for Speed Skating certification or willingness to attain this level during the first year of employment. 

  • Proficient program and planning skills, with proven ability to work in an independent setting. 

  • Experience with fiscal responsibilities and ability to manage program activities within prescribed budgets. 

  • Electronic work-place management skills with proficiency in Excel and Word, Google Docs and Sheets.

  • A current driver’s license with the ability to become insured and licensed in Manitoba if the applicant is from out of province. 

  • Proof of ability to work with minors, such as working with youth. 

  • Vulnerable Person’s background check

  • Ability to travel internationally. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Coach and Manage the Provincial Team (PT) Programming:

  • Responsible for understanding and management of the YTP (A complete YTP will be provided for year 1) for Junior skaters competing in both short track and long track disciplines. The YTP duration will cover from May 1 to March 30.

  • Distribute weekly micros, which should include specific training plans and programs for that week (High Performance committee will assist with the writing of the micros in year 1).

  • Weekly group training obligations will be dependent on the YTP, but as a reference, a typical week would include 2-3 on-ice sessions and 1-3 dryland sessions. Typically, the Provincial coach runs 3-4 group training sessions for the Provincial Team each week.

  • The YTP and micros should include independent cycling workouts, weight training which is overseen by a strength and performance professional, and club ice training which is run by the club coaches. The Provincial Coach is not obligated to be at the weight room or club sessions and is recommended to use that time to focus on other roles and responsibilities.

  • Out of province competitions (4-6 events). Attendance dependent on registration. 

  • Assist with the planning and execution of in-province competitions.

  • Program and oversee in-province camps (1 short track camp, and 1 long track camp) 

  • Past programs and formats available 

Coach and Manage the Development Team (DT) Programming:

  • YTP for a T2T level team (10-14 y/o) that trains and races both short track and long track. The YTP duration will cover from  July 1 to March 30. 

  • Distribute weekly micros, which should include specific training plans and programs for that week. 

  • Weekly group training obligations will be dependent on the YTP, but as a reference a standard week includes 1 on-ice short track sessions and 1 dryland sessions, or 2 long track ice sessions. (2 group training sessions per week).  These sessions may occur concurrently with PT sessions. 

  • Out of province competitions (2-4 events) – Expect 2 additional trips to the above PT programming. 

Coach and Manage Sport Initiation Programming:

  • Coach and manage daytime school programming. This programming will occur during the months of January, February, March at the long track oval and on occasion some hockey rinks throughout the city.  The time commitment will be 5-12 hours per week. 

  • Responsible for coordination and maintenance of recreational program skates. 

  • Help manage the School races.  These events should occur once per month in January, February, and March.

  • Assist with sport initiation programs at the request of the Executive Director.
